Citations of publications?
Hi guys, I need to cite some publications; the easy way is to go to one of the scientific paper access sites and use their citation. But these seem inconsistent. For example: Scriber, J. Mark 1990. "Interaction of Introgression From Papilio Glaucus Canadensis and Diapause in Producing "Spr...

Re: Papilio polytes ssp. & ♀ forms
Thanks for your reply and I feel sorry for my carelessness because this information could be found in the new papilio paper you posted previously >0< I just intuitively treated it as group polytes because of their similar appearance. Adam is always very helpful. I'd not worry too much about misID, ...

Re: How Genetic studies reveal new relationships, species
(John) that makes me wonder what the pros have been doing for two centuries, arguing about whether something is a species or subspecies. While CO1 gives some insight- and clears up some of these issues, I'd hope there was SOME standard being set...or at least a baseline guideline. I see a lot of stu...

Oh shoot! I know I got the email while travelling but somehow it went off to spam and disappeared. Can you resend the link to donate? Or should I just hit the yellow "Donate" button below? Does it make any difference?

Re: How Genetic studies reveal new relationships, species
Thanks Adam. "Smaller difference in COI". Noting the other factors- range, flight period, etc. how the heck then would one determine Sp vs SSP considering COI? If we use 2% as a safe range for species (noting that many are now less than that), what might be the difference for a ssp? Must b...

Re: How Genetic studies reveal new relationships, species
OK, next question! Subspecies. I know IUCN doesn't recognize subspecies, but we all know it has been commonly used for centuries. However, as of late, most of what I'm seeing is ssp or populations elevated to (or recognized as) full species. I can't even recall the last time I saw a new ssp describe...

If you don't go out, you get nothing
This isn't a field report per se, it's reflection on being in the field. Looking back on my 2023 research, I went over a month afield chasing Tiger Swallowtails before I captured one. That's a lot of work with about zero payoff. There's been days I think: it's cool and rainy, I don't want to go. But...

Do we have any BOLD experts?
Bold gives me a list of the top 100 matches and the % match to a given barcode.
It also gives me a map with the location of matches greater than 98%. I don't want this. I want a map for only the 100% matches.
Any idea?

Re: Information: share it or keep it a secret?
Vernon is a driver. Clearly, he has no fear of sharing information for free, the time he's invested- with zero cash return- is amazing. For most people, it's time. The TIME that I put into my stupid pet projects is disheartening, particularly since I rely on others and can't get what I need. TIME is...

Re: Ornithoptera
Since it's a large collection, you may find a US or European buyer who has an import license, and can help step you through AUS export regulations.
It would be interesting to know which Ornithoptera you have obtained over the years, why not share it here?

Information: share it or keep it a secret?
EdTomologist wrote on a topic I've been meaning to voice; he wrote "Given that my work is still to be published I don’t want to reveal too much. I also do have a concern regarding individuals using my work to sell man made aberrations but I believe it’s more important to have knowledge freely a...

Re: Fumigant Lifetime
Up in the NE Great Lakes area, outdoor humidity is about 65% - 75% for six months, then 30% the other six months. Even with multiple dehumidifiers running sometimes in summer it's a struggle to keep the bug room under 50%. This is when the problems start. One thing I've found is that once a drawer h...

Re: Fumigant Lifetime
I've pretty much gotten away from fumigants. If I find any beetles during summer I toss a PDB in the drawer and that seems to take care of them. I'm "fortunate" enough that during winter I can rotate most of the collection through the sub-freezing garage. Purportedly, the drawers have to g...

Re: How Genetic studies reveal new relationships, species
If you consistently see a, say, 1.2 or 1.3% difference between the barcodes of specimens from two populations (or forms, or what-have-you) and there are no barcodes "filling the gap", you likely have two separate species on your hands. Given that one could well argue that COI is better at...

Re: Enough already, with the fake aberrations
Trehopr1 < the "strange" Agrias you see on the market are not aberrations or man-made aberration. They are man-made hybrids from the Peruvian Agrias farms. I highly recommend the new book of Philippe Floquet who illustrates all Agrias natural forms and all know Agrias hybrids : https://ma...

Re: Enough already, with the fake aberrations
Fraud is probably the second oldest profession. It is not going away. And, so long as the offered specimens are not described as natural aberrations the ad is not fraudulent. "Let the buyer beware." Some pretty amazing aberrations have been made by scientists with gene editing CRISPR. How ...

Re: Seed-Planting Drones
On of my dreams is to buy a damaged forest and to let it regrow naturally. I am 41, I should do it now to see some results... but my wife doesn't see the interest. :-) Don't bother in cooler climates, it will take forever. The 120 YO regrowth I'd cited has oaks and maples that approach a meter in d...
