Riodinidae of West Papua

Post by Cabintom »

Today I received a Google Scholar alert linking to this 49 page publication on the Riodinidae of West Papua. Not my geographic area of study, but it is interesting to see plates of species which I've never seen before.

Similarly, there are some pretty stunning Lycaenids in this paper (this time from Papua New Guinea).

I read that great paper few days ago. Stefan Schröder, as always, made a tremendous work.

Riodiniidae are VERY hard to see in Papua, that's why they are not well known at all. They tend to fly in the dense forest away from paths and rivers where collectors go.

I had the luck to catch Praetaxila huntei in 2009 in the Baliem Valley. The only Riodiniidae I saw in my various trips to Papua.
In comparison, you will see hundreds of Riodiniidae everyday in the Amazon.

What I find striking is the color patterns- size aside, I recognized patterns very similar to Papilios, Nymphalids, Satyrids, etc. that occur in or near Papua.
