Peru Heliconiinae/Danainae/Ithomiini Identifications!

Post by neominois »

I know this might be a long shot but I have a lot of unidentified Helconiinae and perhaps Danainae from Peru.

I've racked my brain trying to decide what they are... any help will be greatly appreciated!

Attached are the first 4 specimens.

Are you sure they're not Ithomiids?

They very well could be! This group of Nymphalids are so difficult to identify!!! They are either Heliconiinae, Danainae, or Ithomiini.

Anyone knowing of a good resource I would be very grateful. Trying to ID these guys through the literature and ButterfliesofAmerica webpage is very frustrating.

Plus, these are 4 of about 40-50 specimens in these groups I need names for!!!

Here are my best guesses -

1 - Mechanitis lysimnia (?)
2 - Hypothyris sp. (?)
3 - Napeogenes sp. (?)
4 - Mechanitis polymnia (?)

Hi neominois,
Recently I came across this book online... seems a very through book on the Helicons: "The Ecology & Evolution of the Heliconius Butterflies" by Chris D. Jiggins, large PB, 2018, 288 pgs., 32 color plates. I am planning to purchase this book in the future & would like to hear any opinions/thoughts as to its contents. The book costs around $100.00 USD & is currently available online (Ebay, Abebooks, etc.)

Thank you boghaunter, I'll look into the book! Now if there is only one for Danainae and Ithomiinae!
