Technology and the relentless updates

Post by kevinkk »

While a number of things are on my mind, most recently, this morning for instance, I have been thwarted yet again trying to upload photos
to the laptop from a SD memory card, yes, you read that correctly.
I think that Windows 11 is subverting my endeavors by constantly moving or simply deleting files, and changing the way apps work, like the
"photos" app, which used to work fine, and it has company.
Does anyone else think their patience is being tested by Windows 11? I did not have problem one with my old laptop, and windows 8.1,
every time I see an update on this machine, or my phone, it's cringe worthy.

If you want to keep using an older OS, and the programs that run on such, there's always virtualization. I've been using the same applications for around 25 years now; I have a virtual Win XP machine, running on a Win 10 physical machine. Of course, XP can't run most modern apps, but I have the virtual machine for working with the (now vintage) programs that I still continue to use to this day, simply because those are the ones that I "grew up" with, and with which I am most familiar. I never have to deal with them being updated and changing, because support for them ended ages ago.

And, if you just want to get away from Windows entirely, there's Linux. ;)

I see. Thank you livingplanet3, I think I discovered one of my problems, when it comes to technology at least.
Nearly all your post went woosh over my head. I do like the "classic" tech though, there's nothing wrong with Quake2.

My response is UP YOURS.

I will not download your app. I will not use your portal. I will not update to Windows 11.

"Please see your bill on our portal" Nope. I don't have an account on your portal. Snail mail it, or email it, and I'll pay it.

"New info is available at...." I guess I don't need to know.

"Download the App to pay for parking at Cornell" Nope. I'm not downloading another stupid app to park for two days. I'll just park.

You name it, if they must use an app or some portal with another darned password, I either don't use it, or I dump them.

Same with "dial 1 for English", "dial 3 for support" if I can't talk to a real person, our relationship is over. If I can't understand your agent, our business is finished.

Tired of Microsoft's demands for $$ for licenses- WHICH I ALREADY PAID FOR, I downloaded Open Office. However, after a year of using it, it was too buggy so I used my wife's medical employment to get the MS licenses for free. Screw you, Microsoft.

Chuck, most of my sentiments as well. I do not download apps "just because" I have a Dominoes pizza app, and that's the only one I have put on the phone, all the crap that came with the phone that can be uninstalled, has been.
Windows 11 came with this new laptop I bought in Dec. Paying for Office, or Word?? I don't think so, and the bilingual phone thing? It's infuriating. Just like the 3rd party "support", use that a few times, and you'll figure out it's at best 50/50 if you can understand the individual, or that they will be
any help whatsoever, and make things worse.
Passwords are outta control, and my notebook is full of them.
