Parides neophilus (Peru)

I have been working on a small batch of mixed
Parides sp. that I recently received. This one is
a special delight for its "scarlet-pink" markings
and edges. However, it may still come across
a bit more (red) than in actuality.

Even a slightly angled shot has not improved
the truely brighter pink that it belies.

On the right is a similar Parides species, but I don't know which one. On the left is Biblis hyperia.

I believe this to be the correct species however,
if anyone is the wiser than please let me know...

My guess is that this is Parides neophilus olivencius (female).

On the right is a similar Parides species, but I don't know which one...

I think that might actually be Mimoides phaon (red form).

Well, this definitely is not Parides panthonus which is very rare and has a much narrower red band on the hindwing. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parides_panthonus for photos of a pair.

I would agree with livingplanet that it is probably Parides neophilus from Peru. It is either ssp. olivencius from Loreto, or ssp. anaximenes from the east slopes of the Peruvian Andes (most specimens of this are from Tingo Maria, because that's were there have been many collectors for a very long time). The obvious differences between these two subspecies are in the males.

I hope you didn't pay a panthonus price for this, but I guess you wouldn't want to pay the larger sums those can fetch.

Happy to have this correctly identified with both of you in
agreement. I certainly mis-identified it with my literature sources.

I could make out on the envelope Peru but, the rest is somewhat
"chicken-scratch" handwritting. I'll check more closely if I can make
out Loreto or Tingo Maria.

Fortunately, my little batch of Parides arrived cheaply at $8.00 a
specimen across the board. I try to stay away from things on the
"high side" of expense (mostly).

It may say 'Iquitos' or one of several other collecting localities in the area. If you post a photo of the envelope someone here may be able to read it.

Glad to hear the price wasn't OTT. I was worried that someone was passing commoner species off as rare ones and upping the price accordingly.
