Home or the field?
Not very often, I think it's been about 45 years since I've found moths in copulation, and coincidentally the same species.
Smerinthus cerisyi
Apparently I need to set up my light and try the new bait traps as well, I never thought there would be large moths emerging here
at the coast in late April, typically I wait until mid or late May.
It is pure excitement though, walk out your door, and presto! Picked a good day to plant flowers in the new brick planters we built.
I just set out my diapaused material last week, and here is a head start.

Kevin, you’re going to raise those, right?

Re: Home or the field?
Chuck, I am going to. I will take this moment to admit to putting copulated pair of sphinx into my killing jar when I was still a teenager, it's hard to believe I did that, but the thought of raising the caterpillars never occured to me. In fact, for these eggs,I think I will try and raise all the larva, now I wish we hadn't trimmed the willow tree so much, and save the pupa to release into the neighborhood next year.
