Note that despite the mouthy broad that blamed collectors, the article cited habitat destruction for two of them. Another wholly ineffective move by The Swamp of USFWS.

PS With only common names used, I could only figure out one of the three. Looks like just another hype article for consumption by feel good types

Besides that, the image of "online activists" conjures less than stellar images.

These aren't even USA insects, what authority does USFW have in Brazil? At a glance, it looks kind of, well, pointless.

Why on earth can't they use the proper names. Nobody understands these ridiculous invented English names.

So if I understand well, it is Parides hahneli, Parides ascanius and Eurytides lysithous harrisianus (no idea if other Eurytides lysithous ssp are protected or not).

And I don't know if it applies to "old collection" specimens or not.

I now hope the US Army will bomb all people deforesting in the distribution area of these species... otherwise it's another useless decision, insects are not elephants, predation has no effect on their population, habit destruction has.
American bureaucracy and greenwashing at work.

Time to get Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy involved in US Fish and Wildlife excessive regulations concerning import and export of all dead common insects etc.

That’s a good question. I don’t know ESA well enough. I know Ianni used to sell hahneli so there certainly are more than a few in private collections.

I believe these species are also listed in the EU implementation of CITES, but I certainly saw both P. hahneli and ascanius on sale at Juvisy.

Bob, they were sold with CIC permits, perfectly legal in the EU.
Important to precise that as you are on a public forum.

I would add that the French customs checked several Juvisy sellers' permits during the fair. A friend of mine spent 1 hour with them showing all his permits.

Once again, even a CITES I species can be sold if with proper permits. I was the case for P. homerus recently in France.

USA won’t bomb the narcotics gangs, so I doubt they will bomb loggers.

ESA does have a provision, written into law, that land can be bought to protect a listed species. Theoretically if USFWS really cared enough they could buy that land in Brazil. I won’t hold my breath.
