Death by fungus

An adult hawkmoth Darapsa myron landed on the side of one of my clearwing moth bucket traps, but never left.

Amazing. I had to look it up. Apparently cordyceps occurs in the southeast USA.

That is an astonishing photograph. Vernon, I hope you kept that- if it were mine it would be a favored specimen!

No, don't want to bring this into my home and affect me, nor keep it as a specimen, as this may infect my storage drawers that I will never be able to get rid of, nor take a chance that this will infect my lifelong collection and lifelong work. A photo will have to do. I leave this to someone else to investigate. I have no interest to play around with this. Just me opinion. But is is a really nice example of this parasitic fungus, cordyceps
