Types of bumblebees

Post by gry »

I'm trying to identify which types of bumblebees I have here. All of these pictures were taken this week in my yard in Green Bay, WI. I'm really wondering if the third picture is a rusty patched bumblebee. I do see a little brown between the wings. If necessary, I have a few more pics of that one.

The lower picture may be B. affinis, you really need to see the upper abdomen to get the coloration correct.
I'm using Bumble Bees of North America for a guide, it's almost like the hummingbird guide...you nearly need to be holding the critter.
Queens, workers, and males all have different color patterns and there seem to be variations for a number of species as well.
