The new moons are on July 17 and August 16. Although July 17 is about 10 days earlier than normal, I’ve seen years where it peaks that early. There’s always stuff to go after anyways. Usually the Peloncillos and Huachuca Mtns. start a bit earlier than places to the west like Pena Blanca or Harshaw. There is also potentially some good stuff in August, but probably not Saturniids. If you want the Saturniids though, I bet it will be an early year, so I’d plan on mid July. It’s been 2 wet years in a row, with 2021 being record-breaking and 2022 was above average, so it will be interesting to see this year.

Lovely specimens, but Papilio dehaanii is a separate species to P. bianor. Your specimens from Honshu, Japan are ssp. dehaanii. True P. bianor only occurs in Yaeyama Islands (Ishigaki etc) in southernmost Japan. There is a third species, P. ryukyuensis on Okinawa (ssp. ryukyuensis) and Amami (ssp. amamiensis), whereas the population on Tokara Island (ssp. tokaraensis) belongs to P. dehaanii.

This has been confirmed in a very important paper on genus Papilio (s.l.) that has just been published in pre-proof form. We are not very happy that the publishing company is selling copies of the pre-proof version, which will be different in some small ways to the final official version. This policy will result in more than one version in circulation. Luckily in this case there will not be any scientific differences between the versions. Once the final online version is published I will tell everyone here about it and the many changes to Papilio taxonomy resulting from this paper. In the case of the three species above we only confirmed previous findings, nothing really new.

Hi SEAZ experts, I was thinking about trying out a SEAZ monsoon moth trip again this year, but looking at the lunar calendar, it looks like the moon is full smack dab when I assumed the monsoon aligned? What are y’all’s thoughts? Is there a window? Will the moon be too much competition? When would you go if you believe it’s worth the trip?

I really enjoy finding interesting videos & unusual/rare "bug" photos to share with the like minded crowd here on the Insectnet site. Have you got half an hour to spare? Check out this fabulous video. It is in German (I think?!... someone please correct me if I'm wrong..), but the language of "bugs" is universal. Does anyone know this collector & can tell us more. Is he still with us? What is the current status of his massive collection? The amazing thing about this collection is that he only shows us a few drawers out of each huge cabinet (even has the Alexandra Birdwing!) & every drawer viewed is spectacular!.... what else is there in the dozens of unseen drawers?... we can only imagine!

I will try sometime, but not now, as I am still recovering from my left hip joint replacement & am still in considerable pain as I am still awaiting word on when I can get my other right hip done as well! Right now I am still hobbling around with the aid of two walking canes & cannot carry about glass cases or anything heavy, especially my precious insects!... in fear of dropping them... I think you can understand. They were attached when I got them as papered. I took a risk & set them with abdomens on.
Have some closely related species where the abdomens were removed. These are subspecies of Morpho deidamia. M d electra from Bolivia & M d deidamia from French Guyana
