Catonephele numilia

First picture. Male from Peru. Female from Bolivia.
Second picture. Pair of subspecies esite from Costa Rica.
Third picture. Photo I took of a battered male in Misiones, Argentina in August 2018. Orange spots glowing in the sunlight. The only specimen I saw on the trip.

Another of the many beautiful South American nymphalids, and one with very striking sexual dimorphism.

A true splendor amongst the South American nymphalids to be sure !

You are fortunate Dave to have 2 really nice males. Getting such
nice ones is tough because the black showes everything (like scratches
and wing-mars) very readily....

Thanks Trehopr. It's a butterfly that was readily available as either set or papered specimens during the 1980's (which is when the top two specimens date from).
Agree it's a species where every blemish is highlighted by the velvety black wings.
