Tiger Beetles - Vicious & Beautiful Predators

Tiger beetles are worldwide in distribution & many of them are amongst our most handsomest beetles. Following are some older examples from the internet,

There is at least one species here that mimics ants. Probably they feed on them.

Another cool genus is Amblycheila from the western U.S. and northern Mexico. I've only had the opportunity to catch A. cylindriformis on the Great Plains.

This is Amblycheila hoversoni, the largest tiger beetle in N. America. Native to south central TX.

True, among the tiger beetles, Manticora are quite unusual not only because of their huge size, but also the asymmetry of the males' mandibles. I saw a pair of live M. scabra at the natural history museum in Los Angeles back in late 90s. I've heard that a number of attempts to breed this genus in captivity have been made over the years, but apparently, without success.

Very interesting read on those mega monster "tigers" livingplanet3... Thanks for posting that! I keep learning new things about "bugs" almost every day on this forum! Very cool
