Wild Collected, One-of-a-Kind, Beyond Rare, "Blue" Colias philodice, from Maryland. At auction on ebay years ago... caused a mild sensation in collector's circles. Big $$$.

Last two are really lovely John. That Colias looks like C croesus to me. The three female wings look like they belong to form helice.

To reiterate...again not my specimens/none of these are in my collection...just examples from online of really rare stuff, offered for sale in years past, & that not all collectors may be familiar with...

Thanks for possible Colias I.D. daveuk ;)

Just found another photo, in another file, of the "Blue" C. philodice shown above... it sold for $1,675.00 USD! :o

That luna is amazing.
The Goliath looks like a work of either photoshop or UV light.
The colias could be philodice female/eurytheme male??? Or the male wing glued on, as a gynandro as well as 2 species, I don't know, but I am a skeptic.
The blue colias, don't want to even hazard a guess.

I have never before seen an O. goliath that looked like this. True - it may possibly be color-manipulated; either the specimen itself, or with a graphics program. I hope I'm wrong, though - it would be amazing if an aberration like that really does exist!

Interesting - I can't recall having heard of white morph monarchs before.
The "white" monarchs were fairly well known from Hawaii a couple or three decades ago. I suspect they might have died out - haven't seen much of them in recent years.

A friend of mine and I were collecting in NE Tennessee many years ago, and he caught a Viceroy with the same "white" coloring as these monarchs. I've only seen that one example of a white Archippus.

Hi jhyatt,

Very interesting comments... especially about the White Viceroy (L. archippus) your friend collected years ago. Does that unique specimen still exist?... & if so.... any possibility of you or your friend posting a pic of that rare White Viceroy here? I would love, as I'm sure many others would as well, to see that absolute rarity! I have never heard of a white Viceroy... :o

Adam.
Adam, I am quite sure that the butterfly was exposed to UV light. Parts of the forewings were covered so that the green colour remained.
