Papilio ulysses gabrielis

Post by Trehopr1 »

All of us consumate lepidopterists are aware
of the simple magnificence of Papilio ulysses.
This wide ranging species has somewhere in
the neighborhood of 14 subspecies at least.

Ever popular in the artwork trade as well as
for its many varied and sometimes pricey (females)
and far flung subspecies; it is a species of renown.

Recently, I was finally able to secure myself a fine
(male) example of subspecies gabrielis from Admiralty
Island. This subspecies is well known for its velvety
pitch-black wings and "popping" uber-blue coloration
present nearest the body.

There are many collectors who take delight in having
a generous showing of Papilio ulysses and its many
related subspecies. Having finally achieved this subspecies
I would have to say it is NOT one to be missed !

A really great specimen Trehopr.
My only male of this subspecies has a repaired tail. Yours looks absolutely mint. 😊
