Collecting Chrysina

Post by 58chevy »

There are 4 species of Chrysina native to the USA. 3 of them (gloriosa, beyeri, & lecontei) are found in Arizona. 2 of them (gloriosa & woodi) are found in Texas. This video was filmed in TX by the same guy who did the M. vogti video.

Very beautiful beetles! Over the years, I've reared 3 of the 4 species found in the US (gloriosa, beyeri, and woodi). I've not seen any reports of anyone having reared lecontei; it may possibly be that there is some specific requirement needed to prompt breeding in captivity. Getting the larvae of Chrysina to pupate successfully can be rather difficult and unpredictable, although I found gloriosa to be the easiest by far. Of the 4 US species, woodi is probably my favorite, with its distinctive, metallic blue tarsi -

It's hard to pick a favorite though!
