Red-spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis astyanax)

Post by Trehopr1 »

A butterfly of particular notoriety here in the eastern U.S.
is the steely-blue colored Red-spotted purple (Limenitis
arthemis astyanax). It tends to be a butterfly of woodlands
as well as fruit orchard haunts.

These butterflies absolutely LOVE sap oozing from tree wounds
and of coarse anything having to do with fermenting fruit !

Males and females are similarly marked however, males are
noticeably smaller but, are bolder in their colors particularly
when quite fresh.

Here I have posted a quite fresh example wild captured.

Was hoping to see this species on a visit to Indiana in 2016 but sadly never did. Posting pictures of one of my Florida specimens. A female. A truly lovely species
