This is a video I made last summer after collecting the Colorado Hairstreak. Erikson Springs is in Gunnison County Colorado and is one of my favorite places to search for butterflies and light trap moths. Hope you enjoy the video.

That was great. Nice discussion on the Papilio abberations. I can't imagine field collecting in shorts.

I've seen Stictoleptura canadensis and Pseudogaurotina cressoni in the campground as well as a prionid in the treetops that didn't want to come down.

If you ever get to my neck of the woods let me know, I'd love to show you the area!

I have collected Prionus and a few longicorns at the campground while light trapping. I'm not much of beetle guy, but always look for the showy ones.

Erikson Springs is certainly a wonderful place! I remember your comments about being there on the old proboards forum! I try and get there at least once or twice a year.

My favorite thing to look for in the Erickson Springs/Dark Canyon area is hairstreaks, besides the already mentioned Hypaurotis crysalus, there are also several species of Satyrium in the area.

Image

These were all taken on July 18, 2014 other than the last one on July 29, 2016.

First column Satyrium liparops
Second column S. sylvinus, S. californica, S. titus
Third column S. calanus

Image

The only place I have ever encountered a mountain lion was near the campground which was also a little freaky.

Beautiful! I have also taken a few other hairstreaks from the area. Overall, it is a great place to collect!
