gynandromorph Teinopalpus imperialis

Post by adamcotton »

Today I received an interesting photo taken by a National Park official in the closed Doi Pahompok National Park, Chiang Mai, Thailand. It is a bilateral gynandromorph of Teinopalpus imperialis imperatrix:

All I know is that it was photographed by a National Park official. A few weeks ago they closed the NP to all visitors as they were afraid that they would disturb the butterflies and prevent them from breeding. They also wanted to conduct surveys of them as it seems someone thought they were extinct or almost so. Whoever made the decision to close the whole NP doesn't seem to realise that butterflies are not scared away by people walking around.

Amazing live specimen of Teinopalopus gynandromorph!

As far as I know, one gynandromorph! of a sister species, Teinopalpus aureus is known from Vietnam. Now the specimen is housed in a private collection in Japan.
