Large Tolype (Tolype velleda)
Large Tolype (Tolype velleda)
Many small-medium sized moths have a charm all
their own. Sadly, most are overshadowed by other
larger or more colorful species. However, a closer
look at any moth sheet or porch light is certain to
reveal marvels (here and there) to delight curious
observers.
Lappet moths (Lasiocampidae) are a family of some
2000+ species. Many very unique ones are here and
the American tolypes (3 spp.) are amongst them.
Tolypes are densely covered in hair and they are often
seen sprawling with their hairy forelegs in front of them.
They have a distinctive "mohawk" of blue and black scales
and the patterned wings along with their black/white
coloration may help to disguise their appearance as bird
droppings (splatter).
Here I present a gorgeous (female) example of this species.

Re: Large Tolype (Tolype velleda)
Well said. This really speaks to the value of collecting as its often not until you spread and mount these smaller ones that you really appreciate them fully.
Re: Large Tolype (Tolype velleda)
Regarding Tolype, I have a manuscript in preparation currently on the three species occurring in the state of Louisiana. T. velleda appears to be univoltine, certainly is in Louisiana. The other two Louisiana species T. minta has four annual brood and T notialis has six annual broods. See unpublished comparisons of phenograms in Louisiana.

Trehopper, you make that species look really good. Nice job of spreading.
