Undet. Day-flying moth (Vietnam)

Post by Trehopr1 »

Recently spread this pair of lovely day-flying moths
which apparently mimic a papilio species. Really
good mimicry here.

I initially started with 6 papered specimens but, was
told ahead of time that this species often has wing-
marred individuals or those with wing damage not
always apparent with closed wings. This turned out
to be very true and after relaxing I was relegated
to only keeping these 2 for being the best of the lot.

Fortunately, a fine male + female.....

Anyone know the species ?

A species of Epicopeia, though I'm not sure which one. E. caroli, perhaps? E. polydora?

Very nice species. I have never find it in Northern Thailand which it may not occur there.
I would say it tries to mimic Byasa polyeuctes or dasarada.
Few hundred thousand of years and it will get there.

This should be a form of the highly variable Epicopeia polydora which is indeed a Müllerian mimic with many Byasa species.
