IMPORTANT NEWS : Papilio lampsacus is not extinct !

There was much debate in our community about the status of Papilio lampsacus, which had not been seen and/or caught for many years on Java. Some of its localities have been totally destroyed by urbanisation and logging.
Many thought that this once common species had disappeared. Some thought that there were still good forests on Java that could shelter it.

Well, a photo was taken in March 2014 and just published on iNaturalist. Unfortunately the location is not given. It would be absolutely necessary to make this forest a sanctuary in order to protect this magnificent species.

This news will delight many of us.

Congratulations to Fachry Nur Mallo for the photograph. It is now important that he informs the scientific authorities of the location of the photograph.

Sad to say, with "Java" and "2014" there's a pretty good chance it's extinct in 2024. I presume you've flown over Java and seen the destruction.

No because there are still some good forests on some mountains.
This said, that's why it is important to have the locality known.
