The Joined Underwing (Catocala junctura)

One species of Catocala common in late July/early August
is this one. If you hit it right one may pick up 6-10 really
nice ones just checking local forest preserve picnic pavilions
in daylight. They prefer the cool shade provided there resting
up amongst the eaves.

In just a one weeks time (casually checking two spots once a day)
I picked up all these --- matter of factly. Did frighten away 3 but,
was happy with the general haul.

I spread most in the old "English" style with front/rear legs exposed.

I can't help you much with this one, I only have 3 males in my drawer, plus a few more spares. I did have some eggs this year but unfortunately lost all the larvae.

Anyway, here's a photo of mine, with a single male of the rather rare C. texanae underneath, followed by a couple of female C. carissima.

is a tough one to find in collections; C. carissima is another magnificent species of equal beauty to the Darling underwing (C. cara).
