As I haven't found them online, I hope that the great InsectNet community will be helpful. I am looking for these 2 papers for my reasearch on Agrias taxonomy.

- Prepona sarumani or Agrias sarumani description. Paul Smart 1976 (I am not sure which genus he used)
- Agrias amydon philatelica description. De Vries, 1980

According to funet.fi, the Prepona sarumani / Agrias sarumani description may be in The Illustrated Encyclopedia of The Buterfly (PAUL SMART) 1976.

If one of you can have a look, I don't find anything in the French version I have but it may not be as complete as the original version.

OK I have found the P. sarumani description.
I have it in French in my book version.



Could anyone send me a picture of the original English description, it is in the LAST page of the Illustrated Encyclopedia of The Buterfly (PAUL SMART) 1976.

It is not illustrated in the book. I have the 1976 English edition, and the French text above is an exact translation of the English.

The Saruman Museum collection was sold off. I bought a few specimens when I went there (I don't remember when that was), but I assume that everything was sold individually. Bob may remember more than me.

Everything was auctioned off by Sotheby's at St Mary's on 26th and 27th October 1983. I went there intending to bid for quite a few things, but the prices exceeded the guide prices by so much, that they were totally unrealistic. All I ended up with was a 10 drawer cabinet. There were a lot of different bidders, so that specimen could have ended up anywhere. It's also quite possible that it was sold privately before the auction, as Smart was trying to unload a lot of stuff in advance of the auction.

I must have bought specimens several years before the auction, as I came to Thailand in 1981 and didn't visit the UK for several years afterwards.

Here is the English text scanned from my copy of the book:

42 Prepona sarumani sp.nov.
♂ recto. f/w red with pronounced magenta flush ― towards the outer margin orange-red.
Apical third, outer and hind-margins black. Purple-blue suffusion on hind-margin and a
broad streak of the same colour running from the costa between the red area and the apex.
Outer margin strongly excavate.
h/w black with extensive purple-blue central patch surrounding the cell and only slightly
Invading it. A broken band of very faint red submarginal scaling. Hair tufts yellow. Outer
margin strongly dentate; pronounced lobe at anal angle.
♂ verso. f/w pinkish-red. Two orange-margined black spots in cell. Apical third dark
grey-brown, crossed by two sinuate black lines.
h/w dark grey-brown. Black spotting in and around cell of Agrias-pattern but much reduced;
basally reddish. Two squarish cream submedian spots as in buckleyana. Median band broad,
consisting of fine Silvery-white dots on a darker ground. Complete chain of submarginal blue,
white-centered, ocelli as in A.c. lugens but much smaller and surrounding area darker.
This remarkable insect in appearance lies midway between P. buckleyana and A.c. lugens
but the wingshape and overall facies, particularly on the lower surface, are much closer to
the former. While It may possibly yet prove to be an Agrias-form it affords the most striking
evidence of the close relation between these two genera.
Holotvpe ♂ In the Sarurman Museum. Type locality Rio Huallaga. Peru.
♀ not known.
