Here I present a wonderful rather large Danaid
which hails from the Unumara highlands of
Nagano, Japan.

Recently, acquired by me I find that it was collected
on Sept.04.1998

The species is almost as large as our native Monarch
yet, has a somewhat bi-colored appearance. I find it
rather extraordinary for its coloration and I am quite
happy to have run across it.

This species is included now in genus Parantica
I have collected the nominate subspecies in Northern Thailand. It is a mimicry model for many butterfly and moth species in East Asia.

Thank you very much Paul for the correction on that genus. I was very much unaware of any changes !

Having things up to date is very important...

That change is not recent (about 1982?), but since Parantica is an Asian genus it may not be well known on the American side of the world.
