Hornet Moth (Sesia apiformis) Female

Post by Trehopr1 »

This remarkable Batesian hornet-mimic of a moth is
well known in most of the European theatre including
parts of the Middle East. Found also in the southern
reaches of Britain (from which this specimen is from);
its markings and size afford it a measure of protection
from being eaten by birds and other creatures.

It's model is the robust hornet species (Vespa crabro)
which is coincidentally Europe's largest hornet species.
