Now that Papilio hermeli has been reinstated as a separate species to Papilio chikae, I wonder how this impacts on CITES and the recent inclusion of hermeli as ssp of chikae and thus a butterfly protected under the Convention?

I assume that this has no effect on the protection status. The species will certainly continue to be protected

Marco, thank you.

Today is the last day for open access download using the link in the first post in this thread. From tomorrow the paper goes behind a paywall, but I can send personal copies on request.

Thanks for your sharing. As described in this paper, P.syfanius is treated as a separate species now, so albosyfanius from Yunnan is ssp? What about kitawaki from Tibet?

Here is my listing of Papilio syfanius and P. maackii:

Papilio syfanius Oberthür, 1886
ssp. kitawakii Shimogôri & Fujioka, 1997 (23km N. of Zayu, East Thibet)
= pavonis Chou, Zhang & Xie, 2000 (Yunnan)
ssp. syfanius Oberthür, 1886 (TL: Tâ-Tsien-Loû)
= syphanius Verity, 1907 [Incorrect Subsequent Spelling]
= superans Draeseke, 1923 (TL: )
= kongaensis (Yoshino, 1997) (TL: Mt. Kongashan, Luting county, near Kanting, Sichuan prov., China)
= sichuanica (Schäffler, 2004) (TL: West of Leshan, ‘Red Basin’, East Sichuan, China)
f. albomaculata Verity, 1907 (TL: Ta-tong-kiao, N. W. China)
f. pseudomaackii (Schäffler, 2004) (TL: West of Leshan, ‘Red Basin’, East Sichuan, China)
ssp. albosyfanius Shimogôri & Fujioka, 1997 (TL: Likiang, Yunnan, China)

Papilio maackii Ménétriés, 1858
ssp. han (Yoshino, 1997) (TL: Mt. Wuyishan, Fujiang prov., China)
= shimogorii Fujioka, 1997 (TL: Mt. Omeishan, Sichuan, China)
ssp. maackii Ménétriés, 1858 (TL: à l'embouchure de l'Oussouri dans l'Amour ... depuis les montagnes de Chingan,
jusqu'à Khangar)
= raddei Bremer, 1861 (TL: Bureja)
= jutanus Fenton in Ishikawa, 1882 (TL: not only in Hokkaido, but also in the mountains of the main island)
= tutanus Fenton, 1882 (TL: Toshima and Iburi, Hokkaido)
= satakei Matsumura, 1919 (TL: Honshu (Gifu))
= maaki Draeseke, 1923 [Incorrect Subsequent Spelling]
= jezoensis Matsumura, 1927 (TL: Atsubetsu near Sapporo, Hokkaido)
= mandshurica Matsumura, 1927 (TL: Koshurei, Manchuria)
= kurilensis Matsumura, 1928 (TL: Shakotan, Kuriles)
= kaiensis Masuda, 1929 ()
= masuokai Kato, 1937 ()
= koraiveris Bryk, 1946 ()
= mirus Korshunov, 1998 ()
= nariensis Kim & Park, 1991 (TL: Ullungdo, Kyŏngpuk Prov, Korea)

Note that here I treat jutanus/tutanus Fenton, 1882 as a synonym of ssp. maackii. The name jutanus was published one month before tutanus and the former has priority, but nowadays everyone uses the latter name.

Here is a list of subspecies of P. bootes, and I included P. janaka for completeness, but did not include synonyms. P. janaka has no subspecies.
Type localities are in ( ) after each name.

Papilio janaka Moore, 1857 (Darjeeling)
Papilio bootes Westwood, 1842
ssp. bootes Westwood, 1842 (Sylhet)
ssp. mixta Tytler, 1915 (Yakama, Naga Hills; & Kabru Peak, Manipur)
ssp. mindoni Tytler, 1939 (Hthawgaw, N. E. Burma)
ssp. parcesquamata Rosen, 1929 (Lutsekiang & Rohand, Yunnan)
ssp. rubicundus Fruhstorfer, 1909 (Tsekou)
ssp. nigricans Rothschild, 1895 (Western China)
ssp. dealbatus Rothschild, 1895 (Western China (west of Ichang))
ssp. xamnuensis Tateishi, 2001 (Xamnua, Laos P.D.R.)

Thanks for sharing and the terrific amount of work of the authors. A very little detail, Papilio ulysess penelope, located in Kelang Is, however I cannot find this island from the map, only Kelang in the Peninsula Malaysia which is far away

There are 3 small islands just to the west of Ceram. From north to south, these are Boano, Kelang and Manipa.

In this paper we did not consider the status of currently recognised subspecies, we just listed them under the correct species. It is possible that penelope is just a synonym of ssp. ulysses, but often island populations are slightly different.

The islands might cause natural geographical isolation I think, which cause different phenotype, but I dont know how to define the subspecies or only population differences distributed in different areas. Recently I caught several specimen of Lobocla bifasciata with two extra white spots on forewings in Liangning Province and at the same area, a friend saw some individuals with only one spot or without any spot. So that might not be subspecies but just different populations I think.

That sounds like individual variation if they come from the same place or area.
