New Papilio paper
Re: New Papilio paper
Now that Papilio hermeli has been reinstated as a separate species to Papilio chikae, I wonder how this impacts on CITES and the recent inclusion of hermeli as ssp of chikae and thus a butterfly protected under the Convention?
Re: New Papilio paper
I assume that this has no effect on the protection status. The species will certainly continue to be protected

Re: New Papilio paper
Thanks for your sharing. As described in this paper, P.syfanius is treated as a separate species now, so albosyfanius from Yunnan is ssp? What about kitawaki from Tibet?

Re: New Papilio paper
May I ask what are the subspecies of the Papilio bootes?

Re: New Papilio paper
Here is a list of subspecies of P. bootes, and I included P. janaka for completeness, but did not include synonyms. P. janaka has no subspecies.
Type localities are in ( ) after each name.
Papilio janaka Moore, 1857 (Darjeeling)
Papilio bootes Westwood, 1842
ssp. bootes Westwood, 1842 (Sylhet)
ssp. mixta Tytler, 1915 (Yakama, Naga Hills; & Kabru Peak, Manipur)
ssp. mindoni Tytler, 1939 (Hthawgaw, N. E. Burma)
ssp. parcesquamata Rosen, 1929 (Lutsekiang & Rohand, Yunnan)
ssp. rubicundus Fruhstorfer, 1909 (Tsekou)
ssp. nigricans Rothschild, 1895 (Western China)
ssp. dealbatus Rothschild, 1895 (Western China (west of Ichang))
ssp. xamnuensis Tateishi, 2001 (Xamnua, Laos P.D.R.)

Re: New Papilio paper
Thanks for sharing and the terrific amount of work of the authors. A very little detail, Papilio ulysess penelope, located in Kelang Is, however I cannot find this island from the map, only Kelang in the Peninsula Malaysia which is far away

Re: New Papilio paper
There are 3 small islands just to the west of Ceram. From north to south, these are Boano, Kelang and Manipa.

Re: New Papilio paper
In this paper we did not consider the status of currently recognised subspecies, we just listed them under the correct species. It is possible that penelope is just a synonym of ssp. ulysses, but often island populations are slightly different.

Re: New Papilio paper
The islands might cause natural geographical isolation I think, which cause different phenotype, but I dont know how to define the subspecies or only population differences distributed in different areas. Recently I caught several specimen of Lobocla bifasciata with two extra white spots on forewings in Liangning Province and at the same area, a friend saw some individuals with only one spot or without any spot. So that might not be subspecies but just different populations I think.

Re: New Papilio paper
That sounds like individual variation if they come from the same place or area.
