Weird Butterflies/Moths - Albinos, Leucism, Melanism, Gynanders, etc.
I thought I would start a thread on strange lepidoptera only. Here is an unusual, bred, extreme white fm. of Papilio rumanzovia, from the Philippines, that I found on the internet a long while ago...

Extremely RARE Homeotic ab. of Attacus atlas - supposedly only 2 such specimens known! Hooked wingtip snake patterns from the forewings are partially repeated in the hindwings. I've seen this a few times before in other species of leps... VERY RARE.,

Note.... All of the above weird lep photos, from online years ago, were found on a small external hard drive that I had lost/misplaced for about 5 years & which, I just recently, accidently discovered behind one of my insect cabinets! Anyone want me to upload more weird stuff gleaned over the years?... got lots more! Please note I am posting these photos for educational purposes only (fair use) with no commercial ($) interests.

Yes, I selectively bred these over a period of about 8 years.boghaunter1 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 12:56 am Bred extreme white form Papilio memnon, male dorsal (are these yours Adam?). I have one of your bred specimens that I bought from K. Thorne quite a while ago, but still haven't mounted up...

Re: Weird Butterflies/Moths - Albinos, Leucism, Melanism, Gynanders, etc.
Hi Paul K.,
That partially scaleless C. promethea is not so "pretty", but is still quite an interesting/rare beast. I have only seen a very few similar specimens (other Saturnids & a few butterflies) online over the last 20 years.... curious if it is a developmental problem, temperature related or a true genetic anomaly. Thanks for posting.
Hi daveuk,
Awesome, rare, & beautifully mounted specimens, as usual. Thanks also!
Additional lepidoprera "oddities" are welcome in this thread anytime, by everyone... almost all collectors have some hidden, rare gems in their collections.... they certainly don't have to be in premium A1 condition only (rags welcome...); these oddballs are fascinating (at least to me!) & are scientifically important from a genetic point of view.

The fresh pupa was injected with a chemical to induce melanism, as discussed eleswhere.

Let's add my "famous" ghost Delias bakeri here :
vs a normal Delias bakeri :
As you can see, the black scales are totally missing. These "ghost" aberrations have been found on Hebomoia genus too, but to my knowledge, this is the only known Delias with such aberration.
A funny scientific thing with that specimen : it shows that some yellow spots are in reality much larger than what we see as a part of the yellow is recovered by black scales on normal specimens.
For more info about Delias bakeri : see here : https://delias-butterflies.com/species/ ... ias-bakeri
