Bug Day

Post by 58chevy »

Thursday was Bug Day at my grandson's school. I took some bugs there and gave a brief talk. The kids loved seeing the bugs.

Great job!

I used to do that all the time when my kid was younger. Once into high school though, the teachers just stick to their little routines and have no interest in a visiting entomologist- even if they are studying insects! Dumbing down of America.

The kids love it though. I can still remember in 4th grade a visit from an entomologist. I have no memory of the teacher's name, the subject of study, or anything else, but I remember that one visit.

On the other hand...I did a talk / lighting targeted at kids at a local Nature Conservancy. I thought I could speak their language, but an adult attendee, who was a teacher, translated my speaking into, apparently, plain English. In doing so, the engagement increased markedly. I guess I'm so stuck in the weeds that I can't speak street entomology (which sucks, because I can't speak professional entomology either!).

Nice to see the volunteer outreach.
