I saw this as a kid in the 90s but I've never been able to find it.
When I was at one of my families properties there was this weird wasp nest out side the front door and they were really freaky looking! They had 2 stingers. One was long, and one was wavy.
I cannot find anything on this wasp/insect. So I've drawn a rough image of it and attached a link to this post. I'm not sure about the rest of the body, I just vividly recall those 2 stingers.

Most likely what you saw wasn't exactly a wasp, but a related insect. The stingers are in fact the ovipositor, long tubes for laying eggs deep in trees.

Most likely an Ichneumon wasp
