Ornithoptera meridionalis

Post by daveuk »

Not a perfect pair by a long way & small compared to my other birdwings. Particularly the male.
Glad to have them nevertheless.
Data is for Timika June 2006.
Anyone else got better specimens?

@adam, has anyone ever done DNA trees on ornithoptera? I don't have any Ornithoptera books even.

It might be interesting, because meridionalis looks to have sprung from paradesia chrysanthemum, morphologically speaking.

Always a great species wherever it may be seen in collections !

I have encountered two pairs and maybe four single males (total) in private collections being parted out. I had opportunity to pick up a superb pair from one of the collections but, at the time the asking price was $750 and I just couldn't really AFFORD them.

I have also had the chance to purchase at least three pairs in papers but, again in that case I just wasn't willing to gamble on the chance I might mess up the male (somehow) in trying to prepare it.

Three males on right hand side and second male on third row in from left from Aseki, Morobe Province, PNG. Others from Timika. Only female from Timika is the first specimen on the far left hand row.
