Ochodaeidae

Post by Eleodes »

Ochodaeidae is a rather small and secretive family containing only around 80 known spp. in 12 genura worldwide, within the superfamily Scarabaeoidea. in my years of collecting, I've only come across a handful of specimens from three species.
Parochodaeus pectoralis:

Parochodaeus duplex:

and Neochodaeus frontalis

All three specimens were self collected in Hamilton County Kansas in 2014 and 2018.

Have you found these at lights, flowers, or dung?
Maybe picked up using a flight intercept trap?

They look mighty small since you have them on points so most of us would easily overlook them unless we were "dyed in the wool" beetle enthusiasts.

Of course, some insects have a special "niche" sort of life so unless one can focus on those peculiarities then only a happenstance capture will ever occur...

All of the specimens I've collected were at UV and/or MV lights. They spend the majority of their time underground.
