Limenitis archippus archippus
Limenitis archippus archippus
I have raised this species twice. Both times, larvae were found on willow. The larvae and pupae are almost indistinguishable from L. arthemis. This species is not rare, but not often seen in large numbers either. The first time I saw the larvae of this species was on a lone small sickly looking willow near a soccer field. I located several on the sapling. The next year, the entire field was mowed down.

Re: Limenitis archippus archippus
I raised a small series, as per usual. Male on top, female on the bottom.

Re: Limenitis archippus archippus
Wow, those are excellent rearing photographs !
I remember well finding this species as the occasional larvae on wild willow alongside some railroad tracks which I collected along. Willow grew in the low ditches and in mid-summer I could easily locate several larvae at different stages.
I always liked the "bird-dropping" look of the larvae no matter the stage it was in. They only got better looking with each passing stage.
Pretty easy to raise as I recall; and the adults are a feisty and colorful butterfly to encounter in a field.

Thank you. I actually have dozens of photos per species documenting everything. It’s just too much of a pain to format and upload more than a few at a time. I just posted L. arthemis.

Lovely photos of the life cycle & specimens. I have a darker pair from Florida along with the models D gilippus.
