Is this a katydid (Tettigoniidae)?

Post by hobeeto23 »

Hi,

I live in Sydney, Australia. I found this pink insect on my wax begonia plant and it peaked my curiosity.

I think it might be a katydid, but I'm not sure because I don't know much about insects. It's about 1.5cm in length and has long antennae.

I've attached an image to this post. Any help would be great. Thanks!

The long antennae certainly suggest it is probably a Tettigoniid. This is an immature with a long way to grow yet. Some species are insectivorous, but most are plant eaters, and possibly the colour is due to pigment absorbed while eating parts of the Begonia flowers when it was tiny. Adults should have wings and normally either be green or brown, but I have no idea about identification. Perhaps someone here will be able to help.

Adam.
