Eumorpha typhon & Citheronia splendens

Post by 58chevy »

These were collected in southeast Arizona during the 2019 monsoon season. Typhon looks like E. achemon on steroids.

That certainly looks like a robust/hardy species !

Is that a common species within that state or only
a transient migratory species of the monsoon season ?

Those C. splendens are really something....

I've been to southeast AZ 3 times and collected E. typhon every time. Same for C. splendens. Both are resident species. I've only been there during monsoon season (late July to early August), when they're most abundant and when most people go to collect. I don't know whether the moths are active at other times of the year.

Do you have a picture of E. typhon next to E. achemon? Eumorpha is an amazing genus with really beautiful species.

I don't have a side-by-side photo, but here's a picture of achemon:

E. typhon is residential. I've found larvae and reared it before on Arizona wild grape. It's a little less common and widespread than E. achemon, but still pretty common. It starts flying at higher elevations (7000-8000') in late June and then lower elevations (4000-6000') in late July, and goes until about mid-August. E. achemon has a spring flight, and a summer flight, and sometimes a fall flight. This last season (2022) was pretty bad for E. typhon, as I think I saw only 1. On a typical year it's more like 4-5 per night. Here's my drawer with Eumorphas and some other Sphingids if you want to see them side-by-side.
