This one was a real "mythic" species until it has been found in big numbers in the 2010s.

Managed to get a couple of these for myself. Found the antennae really tricky to set as you can see.

The first one I bought was before they became reality available, I didn't pay a hefty premium for it but I'm not afraid to say that I was a bit nervous setting it.

Recently males seem to be collected in numbers. But females are quite scarce. I found one female in the museum. Huge in size.

Interestingly, as well as specimens from Batang, E Tibet and far NW Yunnan, a new locality was discovered by a reliable Chinese collector/seller at a mountain in Linzhi, S Tibet. This is further west than previously known.

does anyone have a photo of a female ?

I seem to remember seeing one in a Japanese book. It was much brighter than the male
and resembled more Iphiclides podalirius (if my memory does not deceive me).

My avatar is Heliophorus moorei found in Nepal, Bhutan and India. Common in its habitat, a quite cute species.

Here is a female of Iphiclides podalirinus collected in Yunnan, SW China. Collecting data tells it was obtained in August, seems late for this species. But usually females live much longer than males. So it may be precise. This specimen is preserved in RIEB (The Research Institute of Evolutionary Biology), Tokyo JAPAN. Originally from the late Koide Yu-ichi collection. Mr. Koide extensively explored many remote places in China. He is famous for vast collection chiefly Parnassius and butterflies from Palaearctic region.

Unlike Jens' female, this one is lacking the red bands (few reddish scales only).

As explained in this topic, females of Iphiclides podalirinus are extremely rare in collection. So if you need one, there is one on eBay right now : https://www.collector-secret.com/top-insect-auctions
