Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis lidderdalii)
Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis lidderdalii)
Another one of the world's truly spectacular and grand
butterfly species is this one: the Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis
lidderdalii). It is found in Bhutan and parts of northeastern
India including northern mountain regions stretching into
Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and two provinces of China.
The species epithet is after Dr. R. Lidderdale from whose
collection the butterfly was first described by William Atkinson
in 1873. The species was first discovered in May 1868, near Buxa,
in the Bhutan Himalayas at an elevation of 5000 feet by
Dr. Lidderdale of the Bengal Army. He would obtain 2 more
examples from the same locality in 1872.
The unique wing shape and bold coloration of this species
cannot be understated. The unique localities and environment
where it may be found only heighten its already grand status
amongst collectors/enthusiasts.
My specimen comes from Bhutan and was collected in 1948.
It too remains one of my most prized acquisitions.

I have a nice series of lidderdali but only one picture as my digital camera has packed up, I think sadly for the last time.

Re: Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis lidderdalii)
I have been interested in this mystic genus for years. And fortunately I had the chance to observe a mysterious sister species, Bhutanitis ludlowi in Bhutan in 2011. This expedition was organized as the joint survey of Bhutan government and Japanese researchers.
In 2019, I visited western Myanmar and filmed the adult butterflies of B. lidderdalii. Here I share the video clips with you.

Was it a common species once on the right spot ? I guess so, as I have seen some pictures with dozens of them.

Re: Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis lidderdalii)

Yes, this species is definitely locally common. If you find right place at right time, numerous adult butterflies must be welcoming you.
