Papilio memnon

Post by daveuk »

Love this species for the polymorphism shown in the females. A case of some of my best ones from different parts of South East Asia . The male bottom left is subspecies coeruleus from Simeulue off N.W. Sumatra. Sadly don't have a female of this one. It's very spectacular & usually very expensive if & when offered.

Whow! really nice collection!
I recently bought 20 pupae from England and was hoping to get one 2 females, I got 2 males and 18 females. Adam told me that mybe all males ae sold to the U.S., so the "rest" was for me.
t seems that the forms are more frequent in different areas, because the model for mimicry is more or less frequent or does not occur at all.
P.coon seems to be a model?
Thanks Joachim

Thank You.
Did you get different forms in your18 females?
Had never really thought about P coon being a model. It could well be.

Losaria coon is definitely the model for the tailed form of the female P. memnon from Java. Losaria doubledayi, which is a separate species, is a model for the tailed form of agenor from SE Asia and the Malay Peninsula, although the rather smaller species Pachliopta aristolochiae probably also acts as a model too.

I thought I had posted photos of my drawers either on the old Insectnet or the ICF, but I couldn't find them. I will post them here.

Adam.
