unless they are dimorphic, it's not easy unless you squeeze the abdomen to expose the genitalia, I go by body size, which seems reliable.
That does look like a male butterfly.

Re: Can anyone tell the sex of this D. vanillae?
Appears to be a male.
Re: Can anyone tell the sex of this D. vanillae?
Looks like a male. The females are duller orange.
Re: Can anyone tell the sex of this D. vanillae?
........... Judging by everyone's replies, the male D.v. is smaller and brighter, than a female.
This one was comparatively small and exceptionally bright (I have not changed the color by Photoshop).
Here is the print by Maria-Sybilla Merian, from her "Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium",
which erroneously (?) related this lep to the vanilla plant.
The specimen she encountered in Surinam was dull indeed.
Thanks to everyone!

Here is a photograph featuring the species.
Pretty easy to tell apart the differing sexes.
Let's do our best not to leave tasteless remarks
or replies because they will be edited.

Your remark had an offensive tone about it
in my opinion and it was edited.

I will not spar with you about your tasteless reply (delivery) to another forum member who was just trying to help.
I've provided a picture.
You have your answer.

Re: Can anyone tell the sex of this D. vanillae?
I did not mean to offend anyone with my "tasteless remark".
Sorry, if that happened unintentionally.

Dissection of "genitalia" is a common practice in entomology. If some members of this forum are offended by the use of this word, so be it. I don't like offensive language either. But they should become more familiar with the scientific literature.

I think a little levity, while apparently intended as humor shouldn't be taken too seriously. The number of things that offend me is impractical to list,
so- it's just one of those things we have to deal with and assess at the time.
I had a chance to read the deleted remark, and it was not well expressed, as to being deleted, it wasn't my decision, I may or may not have
let it go, that's one of the great things about not being in charge- you don't have to make any decisions, and as a co-worker once told me-
I never make mistakes..."that's because you never make any decisions", one of my famous quotes as a foreman.
so- it's just one of those things we have to deal with and assess at the time.

Re: Can anyone tell the sex of this D. vanillae?
Actually, this is not about the term "genitalia".
I should admit: I've made a rather risky joke, involving this word,
and I apologize for doing that if anyone was offended.
My "tasteless remark" was in line with the style of the "Old Insectnet",
I just did not notice that the rules have changed, in accordance
with the widespread rules of polite correctness.
I hope, that this tread can be terminated now by our GLOBAL (sic!)
moderators.

kevinkk, I sent you my apology in a PM, I hope it was accepted.kevinkk wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 3:19 am I think a little levity, while apparently intended as humor shouldn't be taken too seriously. The number of things that offend me is impractical to list,

Once again, I did not mean any offense.
Re: Can anyone tell the sex of this D. vanillae?
I see no need to alter or delete anything from this thread. Identifying the sex of this butterfly species was a simple request and members chimed in with their thoughts and I then provided a photograph. The question was answered and now we can proceed with further discussions of insects.
