Historis acheronta

I obtained a specimen of Historis acheronta not long ago -



Until recently, I'd not been aware of this species, and had only been familiar with H. odius, which has a very wide distribution -



In addition to some more recently collected odius specimens, I also have one that my father caught in Guatemala in the early 1960s.

Both species of Historis occasionally stray into extreme southern TX.

Very nice genus !

I have always liked the very falcate forewings
of H. odius. Also, its quite a large nymphalid.
I don't have any specimens myself but, I looked
over a wonderful series of it at the museum that
I once worked at years ago.

Falcate forewings are a wonderful feature of the males of a number of Saturniid moth species, as well. Strongly falcate wings are very attractive, I find.
