fauna here in Illinois. To his credit he is THE principal
author of "The Skipper Butterflies of Illinois" (2006) incl.
it follow-up slight revision and additional notes. Most
of the photographs included feature species of his own
personal captures and holdings. Quite frankly, an amazing
and varied assemblage of species ranging from the
top-to-bottom of the state !
Not many folks seem to take-up a special liking for skippers
and so I've thought it only fair to produce an occasional
thread about a given species (here and there) for variety sake.
Now, it could be (generally) said that here in the agricultural
midwest we have been graced "seemingly" with a plethora of
little brown/orange skipper species.
However, a closer look at well prepared specimens often
reveals differences enough to delight even staunch collectors
of all other butterflies.
So, below I feature the Hobomok skipper (Poanes hobomok).
Something about its curious name just begs me to write of it !
This very eyecathing orange-burst of color was named by
(Harris, 1862). It is widespread throughout the eastern U.S
and only has but, one brood on the wing late spring through
mid-summer. It can be found in a wide range of habitats.
Males are the FAR more notable of the sexes for their very
bright "tangerine orange" coloration. Stunning in sunlight....
