Oeneis macounii (Macoun's Arctic)

Post by mothman55 »

Took a day trip to Algonquin Park, Ontario in search of macoun's arctic, a species that only occurs every other year. In this area, its even years.
Saw about a dozen of these beauties.

It would be nice to know the name of the species, as "Macoun's arctic" will mean nothing to anyone outside North America, and I suspect quite a few inside. It looks like it could be some sort of Oeneis.

Perhaps, but species Latin names are the standard, I also see common names used in the classifieds a lot. I agree with Chuck, you can find anything
with that particular search engine that envelopes us all.

I have collected one female of Oeneis macounii on July 3 in Kananaskis ( Rocky Mountains in Alberta )
I don’t know how common or rare it is there but I only encounter it once.
Never went to Algonquin Park to look for them.
I wonder if you did go north near James bay to look for Papilio machaon or anywhere a long Canada trans Hwy north of Lake Superior
