Re: Research grants wasted by universities?
Some good points. However, I wouldn’t say there’s no waste in the system… https://youtu.be/8F9gzQz1Pms Note that almost all Springer journals, Nature included, also publish articles for free. Of course, that means that getting copies of the papers cost money. I always go the free route with Springe...

Re: Research grants wasted by universities?
Even if the money doesn’t come out of the researcher’s grant, it’s still a waste in the sense that $55k was used for overhead as opposed to actual research. What is the university doing that could warrant such overhead? I suppose the research could be conducted in a pup tent or something using hand...

Re: bigfoot in Oregon?
Two weeks ago in Belize, I had just washed my long hair and had it down to dry. One of the village kids saw me in the rain forest and yelled to his mom ‘Look! A caveman!’ This is just wrong - no Bigfoot in Belize . Impossible in fact. Tata Duende certainly would have killed and eaten them hundreds ...

Re: Who has "all" the Papilionid?
Collectors of big butterflies are fortunate as everybody collect them in all parts of the world. With means Papilionid is one the the most acessible families. Of course nobody have all. Complete a collection is like an asymptote. easy to get the first 50 %, less easy to obtain 25 % more etc. the la...

I went to school with Bob Hancock, the researcher behind the video. Ohio State had a captive colony of these mosquitoes, and they were fascinating to all of us. Bob took it a step further than just saying wow!

Re: Papilio machaonides
Hello, this reminds me of an episode from when I was younger. It's all statute-barred.... We were on a trip through Florida, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. you are not allowed to bring live animals into the USA. But we had a caterpillar of machaonides that pupated during our stay. Well, how do...

I have used Hot Shot No Pest Strips to good effect. I didn't realise Vapona worked that quickly. Adam. It's worth noting that handling vapona by hand is dangerous - the toxin is easily absorbed through the skin. I had a friend who sampled weekly using a combination of ethyl acetate (for quick knock...

Re: The Marbled Underwing (Catocala marmorata)
John, What kind of bait do you spray on trees??? My baits are all so thick and lumpy (rotten bananas/molasses and maybe some beer) that a paintbrush is the only way to go. Be interested to learn what you use. But generally I use bait trap, not "sugaring"... cheers, jh It was John Peacock ...

Re: The Marbled Underwing (Catocala marmorata)
I have to tell you that it is almost common just across the border in Indiana where the Wabash hits the Ohio. If you were to slide into the forests along your side of the river, I bet that you would find it at bait sprayed on tree trunks in swampy forest. The hostplant is almost certainly swamp cott...

A friend just shared a photo of this rarity taken last week in NW Indiana. That seems very early for this far north - and may indicate a "big year" for the species.

I have used "Bristol Board" in the past. You can buy it at art stores (it's 100% rag - so acid free) at weights that can be used in a laser printer.

Re: Recognized publication outlets?
It depends on what you are wanting to publish. Using Scriber as an example, he was an evolutionary biologist who happened to work with Papilio glaucus, so he published mostly in high-impact evolutionary ecology journals that are viewed by a wider audience (not just lepidopterists). At the other extr...

We do try and check this as time permits on a daily basis. And Adam is especially effective - probably because he works from a unique time zone. But they do slip through temporarily before the get deleted.

Re: Collecting El Salvador
Jason, most tropical countries do like El Salvador now : you need local permits which are given to scientists only. But this can be done : try to find a US University or Museum who will support your permit application. A lot of University and Museums don't have the funds to organize tropical expedi...

Re: Which tropical hardwood is best for insect boxes?
Thanks for the advice, I am pretty sure that the local Panamanian carpenters don’t dry the wood properly. The level of professionalism in general is super low here. So I really want to make sure that my insect boxes will be fine. Perhaps I should import some Canadian maple just to be safe. Find a p...

Re: Is there a single research forum anywhere?
The answer is nope - a forum would not work for what you are searching for. Static sites are great for nomenclature, identifications and such, as long as they are well maintained. Take a look at the Butterflies of America website as an example of one that is falling behind the times. It has not been...
