Re: A real decline of N.A. Hyalophora cecropia ?
The potential decline of cecropia merits further study, as well as investment by hobbyists. Unlike some other Saturnids, cecropia isn't generally drawn to MV, so it's hard to get a feel for population. Here's a blurb and reference on the tachinid, along with a reference study, should one want to cha...

Wait until you see the price of maple right now. I’d say do use a local wood, but take your time and investigate the right one.

EU has specien in Appendices A, B, C (not I, II, III), species are not distributed identicaly. Some species from CITES II are in EU CITES A list and are treated as regular CITES I. In EU the leading authority is European Council that provdes exact (more or less) rules then accepted by every EU memb...

Re: Is there a single research forum anywhere?
Could you please elaborate what you mean by research? Making observations in order to reach a conclusion. Turning data into information. In the case of web forum collaboration, this would mean having more narrowly defined topics to which others can contribute. And it means more aggressive moderatio...

Re: Which tropical hardwood is best for insect boxes?
Teak is also becoming quite rare and expensive in the world market. While not controlled by CITES, it is under the watchful eye of authorities since it's often labeled as coming from a legal source, but is not. I'd avoid Teak for that reason alone; and what Adam said. LOL I saw a gorgeous and expens...

Lol. A lepidopterist in Panama. You’re going to have problems.
Here our Lep season is done by September except for Catocala. By then I’m exhausted. You my friend are going to burn out.

Is there a single research forum anywhere?
I'm on several research-related (say, research plus) forums and the one thing they're good at is sharing, the thing they're ALL bad at is collating and collaborating. So I started looking, and couldn't find a single one on ANY topic that's half-way decent for research data sharing and collaboration....

Re: Which tropical hardwood is best for insect boxes?
Whichever you pick, if you plan to go back to Germany (or elsewhere) with those boxes, make sure they're a common wood, not prohibited from export or international trade.

Re: CITES in-depth study
Note on US Import laws A final short note on US import laws. I am not an attorney, none of my posts in this thread should be considered legal advise. You are responsible for knowing the laws of the export country and USA. CITES is far from the only laws governing import of dead bugs. There's Lacey A...

Re: CITES in-depth study
Summary of CITES II and dead bugs If one reads the redacted part concerning CITES II, and then further cuts out the parts over which they personally have no control (e.g., what the Managing Authority is responsible for) it become readily apparent that complying with the documentary requirements of C...

THE FOLLOWING EXCERPT FROM CITES HAD BEEN REDACTED To allow for more readily understood discussions specific to the export/import of dead CITES II insects, and ONLY those. Everything else, including CITES I, preambles, live export, re-export, and flowery diplomat-speak has been redacted. Article II...

Re: CITES in-depth study

CITES in-depth study
CITES is poorly understood, not just by entomologists, but by authorities as well. Hopefully this thread will shed some light, and serve as a reference for entomologists, importers, and enforcement authorities. I'll be taking it step-by-step as time permits. This is not for discussion of other topic...
