Neither the African Butterfly Research Institute in Nairobi, Kenya, nor the Royal Museum for Central Africa (which has pics of its collection online) use unit trays.

Re: Unlocking the Hidden Art of Shingling

Bear in mind that there are genera (Neptis for example) which can have diagnostic characters along the ventral FW inner margin or dorsal HW costa. If HWs are set to high up, those features are obstructed rendering specific ID difficult.

Yes, it was not working in DRC. I've just traveled to Kampala and it works here.

I'd love to check out what they offer, but anytime I try to load one of their pages my connection times out. (I have no issues with other webpages.)

Re: "Taxonomic revision of the tribe Acraeini" (The Debate Continues)

I thought Cethosia belonged to Heliconiinae. Has it been moved? No, it's in Heliconiinae. From the paper: Family Nymphalidae Rafinesque, 1815 Subfamily Heliconiinae Swainson, 1822 Tribe Acraeini Boisduval, 1833 Genus Cethosia Fabricius, 1807 Type species Papilio cydippe Linnaeus, 1763 Synonyms: Ala...

"Taxonomic revision of the tribe Acraeini" (The Debate Continues)

For those interested in Acraea , Williams & Henning have published a new paper which is largely based on the molecular phylogeny published in this paper in 2021. Here's the abstract of the new paper: The systematic and taxonomic history of the tribe Acraeini is reviewed. Using a robust dated mol...

Re: Perfect method to relax a butterfly in 4 hours (even Agrias).

Interesting Thomas. Do you spread "old" papered butterflies with that method too (more than one year in paper enveloppe) ? Never heard of a 5-minute relaxing method for leps (except almost fresh ones). This is a good point. Most specimens I set are less than a year old. I have set 5-year ...

Re: Perfect method to relax a butterfly in 4 hours (even Agrias).

Cabintom : just try with ammonia, you will see. Much more efficient than hot water, no need to emerge head and antennae, less greasing risk... I'm satisfied with my methodology, thank you! I push 5-10ml of very hot water (not warm water) through the thorax of the butterfly (in the way Adam describe...

Re: Perfect method to relax a butterfly in 4 hours (even Agrias).

That's what is magic about ammonia. You will see the head and antennae are perfectly relaxed. You don't get this result with hot water injection. I use hot water injection, and while forcing the water through the thorax I submerge the head, antennae, and legs in the hot water. Usually 20-30 seconds...

Poritiinae of Sukadi, Bas-Uele

Back in November, 2022, I traveled to Sukadi, Bas-Uele (also known as Assa or Asa), the site of a small mission station and hospital, to help run a church conference. During that time, I managed to carve out a few hours, on a couple of occasions, to head down the hill and do some collecting. In this...

Re: Unusual Diurnal Moth Behavior?

I once was traveling between Bunia & Kisangani and we got stuck in a long line of trucks trying to get through a particularly bad mud-hole. There were pond sized puddles of stagnant water all along that section of the road. Anyways, we were stopped and standing around waiting as the sun was begi...

Why is this the case? (This is a question about why the code might render names original spelled with "ö" as "o" and not "oe".)
