Re: If you don't go out, you get nothing

I believe that this philosophy can also apply to habitat (in addition to weather or time of day). Most of my most exciting records here in DRC were captured in degraded habitats. I think many collectors who come to the tropics aim to do their collecting in pristine habitats (and there's certainly lo...

New Charaxini Paper

Thierry Bouyer has published a systematic revision of Charaxini. It can be found here . The abstract: The systematics of Charaxini is revised. The three historical genera are confirmed: Charaxes (Ochsenheimer, 1816); Polyura (Billberg, 1820) and Euxanthe (Hübner, 1819). The genera Eriboea (Hübner, 1...

Re: How Genetic studies reveal new relationships, species

With COI, I like the concept of "barcode gap". If you consistently see a, say, 1.2 or 1.3% difference between the barcodes of specimens from two populations (or forms, or what-have-you) and there are no barcodes "filling the gap", you likely have two separate species on your hand...

No more set moths from that trip. I don't focus on moths, so they have a tendency to get "filed" away for later setting.

Re: Luanda, Angola 1992

Leptotes are in the pirithous complex. You'd need to dissect to know which species.

Not Zizula hylax but rather Zizeeria knysna.

The last 2 are correct.

my Android phone camera which seems (very) sensitive to lighting conditions and is far and away a lesser quality camera in general ! You ought to double check and make sure it's not automatically applying some sort of "beautification" filter. For example, my phone came out of the box with...

Re: Two Saturnia of eastern Europe

Here I feature 2 species of Saturniid moths which are present in eastern Europe. Both belong to the genus Saturnia and both are likely bred/raised for the collector/hobbyist market and general fun. Top specimen: Saturnia spini (male) Bottom specimen: Saturnia pavoniella (male) Why did you apply a f...

Re: Permathrin- kills more than just ticks

How does it impact exposed skin like hands and face? I haven't picked up a tick with my Permathrin clothing, though certainly they could get on my hands, face, neck. Having had malaria thrice, this is good info. Yeah, exposed skin is still a potential issue. You can combine with repellent. Add mala...

Permethrin treatment of clothing is also a good way to go if you're collecting/working in malaria endemic areas.
