Re: Research position in Costa Rica!

Sad that ecology- and science- aren't more important. I'm all for paying graduates what they are (not) worth- journalists, political science, media studies. I mean come on, the bar is pretty low to graduate from these, so they're a dime a dozen. I have no pity for them screaming that they can't pay ...

Re: Research position in Costa Rica!

Retired folks can. Plus it's $500 bar money. Imagine, study butterflies in the tropics and enjoy the pub at night for free!

I always just put fresh leaves in, most of the larvae would migrate to the new material within a day- or hours.

Re: How Genetic studies reveal new relationships, species

Thanks Adam! Very useful. Being a ground pounder forced into the genetics stuff, I want an image and collecting data readily available. So I'll continue with BOLD.

Re: Total Cluster: Chestnuts, lab screw-up, politics and media bias

We planted 110 chestnut trees three years ago along the Ohio River. ... follow the river south a bit it forms a "nipple" at the southern point - the tree planting covers the east half of the nipple. . No kidding. I've seen that from the KY side but couldn't make out that they were AC. You...

Total Cluster: Chestnuts, lab screw-up, politics and media bias

I sat on my deck this cold snowy morning, marveling at the hardwood forest only a few meters away. Massive oaks, maples, and the occasional majestic Tulip tree form an apparently endless upright puzzle of almost unnavigable hardwoods. And these oaks and maples aren't just in my back yard- they're ev...

Re: How Genetic studies reveal new relationships, species

I've been uploading to BOLD. A collaborator (who's a name-brand professional) uses GenBank. He says "which BOLD mines now and then." Um...should I be uploading data to BOLD or genbank? What's the difference? The one difference I can find is that I can't figure out how to search for COI seq...

Re: Treehoppers: strange creatures of forest and field

Thanks for the discussion of those treehoppers. I've always found them amazing and have a few taxon, generally accidental captures. Of course these labels will be small and so will the font however, I want it large enough to be reasonably legible with the naked eye. Excel font size has a pull-down m...

Re: Treehoppers: strange creatures of forest and field

Like that bottom right species.

When I have a bunch of specimens from the same place, particularly if the same taxon, I make the labels with Excel, and print off the labels on acid free card stock. Easy! It's the one-offs that get hand written, and that stinks.

Amazing. So many rules. Voting. And the animal doesn't care one bit. It's not even like we don't know it, about it; this is just about what we call it.

I read that. Exciting and interesting. The research on older records was an impressive exercise in frustration and diligence. In fact, I have that publication right next to me; I've read it several times.

And, in Leps alone, many specific names used under multiple genus.

Here in our coastal climate many annuals never die,
Sounds like a foreign planet to me. Here everything is "dead". We won't see a green leaf until late April.

Good luck, and enjoy your "winter" activities.

Yes. I already have a good start without even leaving the house. 2 new Genus/species of livestock, in fact some of my newly purchased ova hatched this morning. Now I need the luck.
