Re: How to perfectly relax butterflies : the vodka method
Thanks.
I have never tried isopropyl alcohol and water, so let us know. It will be interesting.
Which proportion of isopropyl alcohol vs water, do you use ?
Both method seem "chemically" very close and much better than hot water only.

Re: How to perfectly relax butterflies : the vodka method
Please try it on a simple butterfly (Pieridae) and a tougher one and let me know how it works for you.
For me, it is a life-changer !

How to perfectly relax butterflies : the vodka method
We had a lot of discussion about the best method to relax dried butterflies. Here is a new method I have been now using for a year, that my friend Nicolas Grimaldi taught me last summer: the vodka method! It is very simple , very fast and it relaxes the butterflies much better than the classical met...

Re: Agrias butterflies
With the vodka method, you don't even need to put them in the fridge.

Very nice !
I met Idea only once in the field (on Biak island, New Guinea). They are very delicate, slow flying beauties. Wonderful to see.

Re: Agrias butterflies
Try to soak the kitchen paper with vodka, it works better than boiling water and avoid moisture. With vodka, you can then leave big specimens like Agrias for 2 or 3 days if needed and don't have to inject them. Now, I only use this method, that I learnt last year from an entomological friend. With v...

Re: Agrias butterflies
Agreed, here in the US this species seems to have been a real scarcity amongst dealers. I'm willing to bet that virtually any collected over these last fourty years or so probably went directly to Europe or Japan -- with barely any ever making it here. Agrias narcissus is a common species but harde...

Re: Agrias butterflies
I still cannot help myself as seeing the "original" Agrias species as being (somewhat) diffrent in appearance from (most prepona). No Agrias or Prepona specialist thinks Agrias and Prepona aren't different. Keith Willmott who synonimised both genera in 2013 wrote that : - " Agrias ha...

If from New Guinea or surrounding islands, you should ask to Rob de Vos.
At worst, he may be able to give you a better contact.

Re: How do you find people to trade insect specimens with?
Be careful with facebook though, it is not moderated by entomologists and there are a LOT of scammers (including some entomologists).
You can also post some Classified ads to make exchange in the InsectNet Classifieds : https://www.insect-classifieds.com/

Agrias butterflies
As I have been impressed by the rare Agrias forms recently shown on the forum by Manfred, I have decided to create a topic dedicated to Agrias . Agrias is one of the most breathtaking butterfly genus and a very interesting genus to study due to the complexity of its local forms, natural hybridizatio...
