Re: What value in citing the original author/ describer?
Is there any sort of standard? Not that I've noticed. No, there is no standard, just that type specimens should have a label on the pin clearly marking the status as a type - holotype, paratype, syntype, lectotype or neotype. There are no other valid type designations. Sometimes the incorrect term ...

Re: What value in citing the original author/ describer?
On the other hand, name-bearing type specimens should be clearly labelled so they are easy for a researcher to identify. This is often a problem with type specimens of older taxa. Anything older than 20th century may not have a label on it unless a researcher or curator added one, since before then ...

Re: What value in citing the original author/ describer?
There are no 'rules' about labelling specimens in collections, other than any that may be imposed by the institution or private collector. Personally I do not include 'author, year' on my specimen labels (that would take up more space) and I do not use header labels in my drawers. I would think that...

Re: LIVESTOCK IMPORTATION
Apart from CITES restrictions (permits would be needed), I doubt it is viable to import birdwing ova since they hatch very quickly. Most Papilionid ova hatch in a week or so of being laid, maybe more at lower than normal temperatures, so it would be very difficult to import ova commercially. I don't...

Re: What value in citing the original author/ describer?
The taxon name is linked to the original description via 'author, year' in order to precisely indicate what is being referred to. Sometimes the same name was published more than once by different authors (homonymy), so citing 'author, year' distinguishes the senior name from the junior homonym which...

Re: New Papilio paper
On that line of thought, that being the genetic distance of two apparently similar appearing species: to my mind, this suggests either (1) convergent evolution, or (2) an ancestral species that looked like, or at least had significant genetic code for, a Tiger Swallowtail (as we know it.) So which ...

Re: New Papilio paper
f.e. I red many times that Chilasa clytia from Lesser Sundas ( echidna, takizawai ) are maybe something different. Nakae (2021 - Gekkan-Mushi, (602): 35-39) already separated Papilio echidna from P. clytia . He wrote: 5. Papilio ( Chilasa ) echidna Boisduval, 1836, stat. rev. Papilio dissimilis Var...

Re: New Papilio paper
Under ICZN Code article 32.5.2.1 "ö" becomes "oe" only for names formed from German words. Bror Yngve Sjöstedt was Swedish, so his name becomes 'sjostedti' under the Code.

Re: New Papilio paper
Gerardo Lamas has kindly pointed out some nomenclatural errors in the paper, most of which I really should have spotted, especially that the name Papilio theseus Cramer, 1777 has priority over Papilio javanus C. Felder, 1862. This is a serious error, caused by my inattention to the dates of publicat...

Re: New Papilio paper
I should clarify that I am not directly involved in the DNA analysis or building the trees and other analyses of the sequences. As well as providing samples I verify the identity of specimens and work on morphological taxonomy and nomenclature. Geneticists are not always so familiar with the actual ...

Re: New Papilio paper
Dr. Sperling is a giant in the field. Yes, I have been assisting Felix for very many years. He was a pioneer in Papilio genetics, and many of the samples used in a large number of analyses which were combined in this paper came from me. As well as Felix's own machaon group studies we were both heav...

Re: Papilio ulysses
I believe what Adam is inferring, or stating, is that a broad, yet detailed, genomic study of many Papilio has been completed and (1) the paper is being released soon and (2) nigerrimus was found to be synonymous with orsippus. The delays were basically because the publishers originally posted a pr...

New Papilio paper
The Papilio paper was finally published on 30 March, and can be downloaded from https://authors.elsevier.com/c/1gqTf3m3nNAEK5 before 18th May 2023, when it will be placed behind a paywall. I have been busy preparing a summary for you all, and have pasted the text here: (A fully formatted version can...

Re: Papilio ulysses
Papilio montrouzieri has always been treated as a separate species from New Caledonia, it is not one of the species newly separated from Papilio ulysses.

Trehopr1,
Wingspan would help Dave. I seem to remember that there is a larger and a smaller 'yellow' species in Kachin.

Re: Papilio ulysses
Now that's cryptic! You didn't write "orsippus is the eastern species" you wrote "orsippus belongs to the eastern species." ?? AFAIK the only ssp east of rothschildianus is orsippus. So now there's more than one ssp of (whatever) east of rothchidianus ?? I didn't say east of rot...

Now you have my interest. Two new species, huh? I suppose ssp orsippus and georgius are still uylysses? Yes, one in the west and one in the east, orsippus belongs to the eastern species separated from ulysses . As for georgius there is no such subspecies. The correct name for this is rothschildianu...

Re: Papilio ulysses
I was impressed that you collected the joesa male yourself, especially as it only has a small rub mark on the forewing, much better quality than I expected a wild caught specimen is likely to be, especially of an active species like this one.
Do tell us how you managed to catch it.
