Re: Visit to Carnegie & Bandrow

Thanks Bob! My question boils down to this: are institutional collections, which arguably have limited revenue value (i.e., most specimens are perceived as not contributing to income from grants, research, etc.) at risk? It costs space and money to house collections of any size, and far more so for ...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II

Most show extensive, multiple bird hits to hind wings Are they good at avoiding being eaten, or are you only seeing the survivors? Adam. Good question, and I'll try to shed some insight quickly, since I'm going out the door. Studies have been done concerning whether dark vs. yellow morph in the nom...

but described as "waxed" Avoid 'waxed' envelopes ... the wax can melt in the relaxing box and glue the specimen's wings together, especially if the relaxing box is warm rather than cold. Adam. I learned that the hard way circa 1993. The wax did melt, and didn't just glue the wings togethe...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II

14july23: primary survey field, NY Ontario Co. ~12 observed, 6 captured of which two are female. Most show extensive, multiple bird hits to hind wings; a few are fresh. First observation in 2023 of one actually nectaring on Beebalm. The yellow Cup Plants are starting to bloom, but I don't think they...

USA source for glassine specimen envelopes

Hi all, what's the best source now for glassine envelopes? I'm suspect of what I found online; I need size approximately 4.25" x 2.75". Amazon: though I'd prefer opening along the short edge : https://amzn.to/3Q48Q0c These are probably close enough in size, opens on short end, but describe...

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II

12july23: went looking for Tigers in Bullitt Co KY. Saw four, all yellow. Milkweed is starting to bloom, but they didn't seem interested; neither thistle nor tall ironweed are close to blooming, and those are the primary nectar sources that coincide with the big August eclosion. 13july23: returned t...

Re: Euphaedra

Tom, YOU are the expert, LOL. You keep digging up these odd and obscure Euphaedra from new locations, and opening cans of worms.

Do you have access to a freezer? Reason I ask, if so you could pull a couple legs of each specimen and freeze them for later genetic analysis.

Re: Tiger Swallowtails of NY: Finger Lakes, Part II

Interesting update: I told a wildlife photog about the multiple puddling sites on the dirt road; he went the next day and saw none. So whatever was attracting them apparently disappated or something. Goes to show how a fortune accidental occurrence can be just that. Meanwhile, July 8 & 9, back t...

Re: What has changed recently with importing?

The best place to start is read the most current version of Federal Code of Regulations on wildlife import. It was too much hassle to legally import, so I quit my license about a decade ago and no longer import. Don't know about the broker, that would be new, or it could be just rumor, check FCR. I ...

Hard to say; could be just worn that way, or could be the Insufficient Scale Quotient form.

Re: Accidentally faked color morph: Nicrophorus

Hi Chuck, I think you're on the level - this appears to be a specimen of Nicrophorus tomentosus , which has dense yellowish pubescence on the pronotum - the only species in the U.S. with a hairy pronotum... No fakery here! Cheers! Bandrow But it was black! or dark brown. And it's not the pubescence...

Accidentally faked color morph: Nicrophorus

I accidentally made a fake color morph.

Image

This nicrophorus was near my MV and I didn't feel like bagging it, so I tossed it into the pan of soapy water under the MV. The next morning the protonum had turned white, and still is.

Re: Laurel Swallowtail (Papilio palamedes)

I find that the butterfly is a low flyer, not a canopy species, and have netted them on the wing a few times. That is my experience as well. Nor are they particularly attentive, and they like to fly down trails, making them an easy capture. In FL, they are common on coastal trails, along with mayna...

25C mostly cloudy; sun totally blocked out by smoke from the Canadian fires

Nothing. Went south 30 minutes to a place I spotted last year with stands of milkweed, but the milkweed was 1% blooming. Saw no Tigers.
